Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen - recording recommendations

Hi -

I'm usually over on the Bass Guitar Forums, but thought this would be "The Place" for my question:

Can anyone help out a fretless brother & recommend some stand-out/favorite NHOP cds, esp. any with Joe Pass and/or Oscar Peterson?

He was/is a truly astonishing player.

Thanks much!!!!!

2 little known killers are
Kansas City 5 (with Count Basie) and No Problem (Chet Baker). They make me smile and say "wow" every time.

(Title edited to reflect specific thread question)

Well, the obvious one is "Chops" with Joe Pass, which is a duo CD. There's quite a bit of stuff with Oscar Peterson. There's also a great video/DVD or Niels with Kenny Drew in a trio format, which is a great watch if you're trying to pick up any technical information about how he played... lots of close ups of the hands.

There's that Oscar Peterson Trio album "The Trio" that has all 3; Peterson, Pederson, and Pass.

As a followup to Chris' response, there is a second Pass/Pedersen duet CD called Northsea Nights. It's a monster live set from around the time of the Chops session. It's (as is Chops) on Pablo. There are also a whole bunch of Youtube videos with the two of them.

Niels with Tete Montoliu

NHOP recorded several CDs on Steeplechase with the Tete Montoliu, the late, great Spanish pianist. They're all great.

Chet Baker -- "The Touch Of Your Lips." Chet, Niels, and Doug Rainey.

The albums "Daybreak" and "How Deep Is The Ocean" are also from these three, just not quite up to the level of "Touch..."

+1 on the "No Problem" suggestion.

NHOP with Archie Shepp - "Looking at Bird" on Steeplechase.

Duo album, all standards. Great solo ideas.

I was listening to Dexter Gordon's "One Flight Up" this morning (even though it's usually a late night record for me). The pocket that he finds with Kenny Drew and Art Taylor on "Tonya" is one of the best in the Blue Note catalogue. How good it is surprises me every time I hear it.

Thanks again to all for the many suggestions!

I decided to start with "Catalonian Fire", a Tete Montoliu album/CD with NHOP and Tootie Heath, mainly because I seem to recall hearing this back in the day & wondering:"Who ARE those guys?".

WHOA!!!!!

Very impressive work from all three - some serious pocket/groove/swinging going on here, definitely.

IMHO, NHOP's playing here is phenomenal, esp. on "Sweet Georgia Fame", "Falling in Love with Love" and "Body and Soul".

He occasionally does this triplet thing "at-speed"... let's just say my jaw still drops when I hear him do it, even after repeated listenings to the entire CD.

(Does anyone know if he may've used 3 fingers on his plucking hand?)

Articulation, ideas, execution, precision, time - it is all there.

p.s. - can anyone tell me how to get the O-with-the-line-through-it on my computer keyboard so I can spell his name correctly? Likely something to do with the Alt key...

Edit: just found the NHOP Technique thread and answered my own question above...
