There's a great shot of a very young PC w. Donald Byrd on a Savoy release of Donalds called "Byrd's Word".Paul is holding that bass.It has been reissued on CD.Also a head shot of PC and that basses scroll on a Bluenote two-fer w. John Coltrane. It's called 'Highstep".
I have a Gary Karr album that has a picture on the cover and it looks like the same maker; The Lady's head scoll. If I recall it's on Golden Crest label and one of the tunes is " Londonderry Air"[ Danny Boy].

I dunno, I e-mailed him about it a few years ago and I got no response. It was going for $2500. He's at http://www.davidmix.com/

There's great footage of the lady scroll bass on the 1959 CBS TV footage with Miles & the Gil Evans orchestra. He would play the "so what" melody starting in half position and shift up.....old school...and his strings are plain gut, all of them. He sounds great, even though his intonation was never great

Here's a screen shot. The clip's great. I love all the guys standing around in the back of the studio smoking while they wait for their solo ...
