Paul Chambers biography project

I am writing a biography on Paul Chambers and have already gathered a great deal of information on the man and his music. I have followed an earlier thread on this site and will be able to use some of the stuff contained. My request now is for further information relating to the man and his music. My work has reached around 90,000 words and I have a 120 page discography which is growing. Any information (or leads) you may have may make a considerable difference to the forward momentum of my project. There are a lot of people waiting for this one. Can you help me fill in some gaps?

I am begining a research project on Paul Chambers and finding that there is very little written about him specifically (as I'm sure you already know). The project is for a doctorate in jazz studies from the Univ. of Illinois.

I would be very interested in getting a copy of your book when it is completed and citing you as the most recent and comprehensive source. Be sure to let the talkbass community know when and where this book becomes available!

Also, if you'd like to compare notes please feel free to email me, although I will admit I am in the early stages of research here.

I'm glad to hear of this renewed interest in Paul Chambers and look forward to both books. I only hope that, as students of music, you will devote a few chapters to his music, his technique, his solo style, and his walking style, unlike most biographies of jazz musicians that are written by journalists more interested in drug use and name dropping.

I can't wait for this bio to come out. When I began to study the UB, Mr PC was someone I'd heard of, but to tell the truth, Mingus, Brown & Carter were the ones I'd listened to the most. Then I discovered PC's music and KABLAMO. When I found out how many people he played with, I was'nt surprised.

Unfortunately, like Scott, another genius of the bass taken from us way too soon.

As far as info about the man, you might email Jim Stinnett, a bass professor at Berklee College of Music, and also talk to Shane Allessio, a student of his. They are both Berklee's resident experts on PC, from what I understand. Good luck!

you might want to try and track down larry ridley and chris white. they were both friends with paul. im not saying that i'm sure they'd be willing to help, but it might be worth checking in to .

Dear Rob,

I was just wondering how the biography you are writing about Paul was going? Have you got any closer to finishing it yet? I worked at a London Literary Agency for 14 years from 1990 to 2004 and still have contacts there, so if you were looking for an Agent to try to sell the book once completed, I'd be happy to recommend you to somebody.
All I'd want in return was the satisfaction of reading the finished product as I've been a fan of this bass player for quite some time.

I think that quote was Dan Morgenstern or Martin Williams; will check.

The book was published on 30th December 2012 and is now all over the place inc Amazon. I am now researching Jimmy Garrison!

I am not aware of any intention to release this for Kindle.
