Peter Kowald 1944 - 9/21/02

I was going to resurect the old thread I started 3 months before he passed in 2002, but it had just degenerated into an unproductive discussion about Jarret ticket prices, Hence the new one.

In the midst of organizing this with Joëlle Léandre:

I have been revisiting a lot of Peter's recordings. He was the reason I picked up the double bass in the first place and his sound still does it for me every time I hear it. He had a gigantic warm, and powerful sound.
His whole career was a solid block of artisitc integrity. He used improvised music as a way to communicate across cultural boundries traveling to Tuva, Greece, Japan, Africa and 3 month tour of the US in 2000.
I have a cdr of a solo he did in Tel Aviv where he talks about the signifigance of a German musician perfoming there before he plays one of the most beatiful solos I have ever heard.

Anyway, he has plenty of cds out, you can see bio and discography at his site http://www.kowald.de and video of our duo at mine.
This is a great interview I have posted before:

Peter Kowald is definately missed.

I wish that I had had the chance to see him play in person and meet him, but poor timing and then 9/11 thwarted both chances that I had. His solo record, "Was Da Ist" was one of the main factors which made me switch from the guitar to the double bass. Damon, I'm glad that you had the chance to play with him on a number of occasions. Thanks for the post in memorium and the link to the interview.

By the way, where can I find the Tel Aviv CDR?
