Bump. Obviously you guys havent heard him so I reccomend that you do some listening
http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/richardsonflanigan2
thats the cd baby site and you can listen to some tunes.
Visitation, Lullaby of the Leaves, and It's A Wonderful World are instrumental tracks and I believe all the songs feature Phil. Its a great deal for any of his cds. If you email him you might be able to get some of the older cds hes done as a leader that are all instrumental.

I remember Phil Flanagan when he was in NYC in 80s. My friend Pete Shortell was friends with him and was always telling me to come down and hear him. He used to play with Mike Ledonne among others. Great player with great feel and chops. Got a really warm, full sound.

I had only heard Phil during his stint with Scott Hamilton. A mutual friend brought him over to my house when Phil was in town doing I don't remember what.
I handed him a bass and he started playing through a whole bunch of Sott LaFaro's solo's off of the Vangaurd sessions..... I told him to get outta my house immediately!
Of course, i'm kidding...he sounded just great.

Clay, baby, I think you've missed the point. To the initial grievance, what does Phil's being white, black, brown, pink, etc., have to do with the way he plays?

Secondly, ask yourself, what's "bad"? Is Eddie Gomez "badder" than, say, Charlie Haden because he can play more notes? What about sound and time?

Not to get too heavy about the whole business, but the racial aspect is not cool.

We could try starting up the "Dude!"/"Sweet!" exchange. It would have about as much intellectual weight as "plays great for a white guy"...

Hey guys don't get to down on Clay. I'm sure he didn't mean anything by it. He's actually pretty cool, for a white guy, I mean. Sorry I couldn't resist!

Oh, I dunno. Kind of speaks for itself. I love it when guys who haven't been playing as long as I've had the same strings on my bass start telling me what I'm doing wrong.

His myspace page says he's been playing upright for 2 years.

Look, KOKO, I'm sure Clay's a nice cat. I (despite much written evidence to the contrary) am a nice cat, too. I (despite much written evidence to the contrary) also occasionally say Something Stupid. And when I do, as a member of a 28 year long relationship, you can believe I hear about it.

Clay. Sorry for initiating the pile-on, but I think, in the best scenario, that's what a forum such as this is good for: education, and hopefully not just about playing the bass.

I have heard Phil, and he's a good player. I, unlike some of our bretheren here, have NEVER said anything stupid.

Except for that.
