I was just showing the Bass Player article to my step Dad about 2 hours before reading this post.
I was not familar with him before reading the article, but I'm glad that I was introduced to him through it. I'm sure there are many lessons in his music, and I look forward to hearing more of it.

On my first lesson with Guillermo Edgehill back around 1969/70 (pupil of Stuart Sankey and latin great) he put on a record for me to listen to. The song was 'Shadow of your Smile', bowed double Bass with solo. Beautiful sounding Bass and player. he asked me to guess who it was. Well, I was about 18 years old and didn't know to many names so first I said "Gary Karr?".. 'NO' he replied. "ah.. Richard Davis?"..'NO' he replied again and smiles.. "Who then" i replied and shrugged my shoulders. 'Cachao'! He said proudly.
I was no less than shocked.
Shortly after, I was invited to play in an Orchestra uptown (NY) called 'The West End Symphony' by Guillermo's friend and fellow Panamanian Mauricio Smith who I had worked a Summer with in '69 subbing for his regular Bassist John B. Williams.
The Orchestra was mixed with local players and professionals alike. One day I walk in and who's next to me? Cachao! Mauricio had also invited him when he was in town that time. Hubert Laws played Flute right next to Maruicio as well. Also in that Orchestra on Bass was Paul Biase (before he did his 14 years with the NJ Sym. and before taking over Fantoni's shop as well) and Irv Manning, a British import!

It was great knowing Cachao for the brief time I knew him personally. He was the warmest person you could meet and such a giant in the music world.
