Red Mitchell, Ron Carter w/ Jim Hall

Over the years, I've worn out 2 copies of the Carter/Hall "Alone Together" vinyl. Loved it. I'm not so enamoured of Ron these days, maybe I just listened to much, whatever.

I'll never tire of Jim Hall's playing though!

I've never heard the Mitchell/Hall album, and I understand that it's hard to obtain a copy right now. Any comments or comparisons about the differences in the sessions?

IMHO... One side is Jim Hall with a great jazz bassist.
The other side is Jim Hall and some guy who is BEYOND categorization in musical terms. Even the fact that he played the double bass becomes meaningless. He lived somewhere in the musical neighborhood of Lester Young and Bille Holliday. He was Jim Hall's musical brother.
IMHO.

Heh... I saw the thread title, and was ready to post something almost identical to this. Great minds....

It's easy to dismiss Ron's playing with Jim when compared to the sublime interplay on the recording with Red. I actually really prefer the live album Jim and Ron did together at Village West over "Alone Together".

But I agree with PW's assessment. The Hall/Mitchell duo is the benchmark for me.

Thanks Kevin, I've been looking all over for this. Perfect end to the Thanksgiving holiday in the US.

Yeah Kev...I can only imagine the frustration of so many posters hearing about this for such a long time... I even felt guilty, at times, for having it. Free at last.........
Red Mitchell was one of Jim Hall's mentors and you can hear it all over the place.
This beauty really helped open my ears in terms of how to listen to great players play great music together. I stopped listening to a bass and guitar, and started listening to two, very old friends having a very deep, intimate discussion without the barriers of any kind of language, censorship...As i've sensed before, even the instruments they play become secondary to me. IMHO.
These two may be from another planet........Take me now Jesus....
