Roma Vayspapir

My teacher gave me a copy of one of this guys CD's. He seems like an excelllent player, he arranged the Koussevitsky for Bass and String Quartet, really great recording...nice sound, interesting and exciting interpretation. He also plays the Chanson Triste, an arrangement of Prokofiev's March from "Love for Three Oranges" for bass solo, Shostakovich Lyric valse, and a Tchaikovsky Melody. Anybody else hear of this russian bassist?

I've heard him a little bit. He's a well known soloist. Lemur, I think, used to carry his CDs; they may still do. I know he's really good - I'd like to hear more of his recordings.

He's retired now, and lives in Spokane, Washington.

From what I hear, he was Eugene Levinson's main rival back in the USSR. It was a little bitter between the two of them according to rumor. They both defected around the same time, and he ended up principal of the Spokane Symphony.

One of the grad students at Rice, Scott Dixon, grew up in Idaho and studied with Roma. Scott has nothing but great things to say about him.

Roma Vayspapir

Can anyone send me some more detailed information about the Roma Vayspapir recording?

What is the catalogue number of the CD? Which artists perform on the Shostakovich track and whose arrangement is it? When and where was the recording made? In what year was the recording released?

I studied with Roma right after he came to the US, spoke very little English then but still could teach very effectively. The first lesson he changed my German Bow hand which made me twice the player I was by the end of the lesson. If you ever get a chance to study with him take it. I consider my studies with him to be some of the most blessed moments of my life.

I also studied with Gary Peacock and he was a very good Jazz teacher. Communicated really well and got my jazz chops together.

As Paul said, I can never say enough good things about Roma Vayspapir. I studied with him for over five years, and still play for him as often as I can. Definitely one of the most wonderful musicians and human beings I'll ever know.
