Question Those players at WTC

Who were those guys behind the soloist singing AVe Maria at the WTC memorial service 10-28(frequently rerun on CNN, etc.) lined up with their C-extensions? Esp. the one with the bushy hair in line with the camera?

That's the St Luke's orchestra, I think--it was some church orchestra is what I can say with certainty, but I'm not entirely sure which Saint whoever-it-was. Or maybe it was St Mark's. They're apparently a very well-known orchestra in NYC.

Orchestra of St. Luke's is an excellent orchestra from NYC. The bass section is formidable, but that's not who is in the picture. They may be subs, or it might not be St. Luke's. I'll get more info from Louise Koby, a friend/bassist wih St Luke's.

By the way, that's just their name. They're not affiliated with any particular church. They play at Carnegie at least 3 times a year.

That is Orchestra of St. Luke's. The bassists in the picture are (L to R) John Carbone and Greg August. Louise Koby was also on the gig. John Feeney (principal) and Lou Paer were off. The weather was very cold, to the point that at the end, the basses were hardly speaking. With the C extensions, you know they had their good basses.

Wow, good to know that I got it right. I caught just a bit of it while making a quick CNN check to see if the world had ended since I'd last caught the news.

I'd not thought about the deletirious effects of playing outside in a NYC October: It's been a very long time since I've played DB outside in any context (I'm thinking probably June 1986 was my last outdoor gig). I used to do winter gigs on tuba in HS. I remember lubricating the valves in the horn (and the horn player) with dips from an airline bottle of vodka.

Thanks, guys for the research. I just thought it might be my opportunity to see what someone famous actually looked like. (As in, well the guy on the left is Don Higdon.....
