Check Greg out on Lee Konitz's Some New Stuff
Awesome disc that plays a little like a revisit to Motions, however many decades after

I'll have to check it out.

As a side note, he seems to have a penchant for weird stuff! I like it.

Someone mentioned them earlier, but after hearing both in New Orleans this past weekend I have to give another shout for James Singleton and James Cammack. I saw Singleton killing with Plunge at an LMF in-store (if you don't have any of their records I very highly recommend them), and Cammack was owning the jazz tent with Jamal, bad sound quality and all.

I came back really inspired to attempt to suck less.

Thomas Morgan.... He's a serious bass player. Knows the "role" of being a bass player, always covers his "responsibilities" and also transcends them. He plays with everyone from John Abercrombie to the incredibly wild free **** with Mary Halvorson. He also is big on the minimalism scene with tyshawn sorey and is a regular member in one of Paul motian's groups.

Is John There?

I have not read ALL the threads however, I hope the name "John Leftwich" is included somewhere in the above comments? I'd kill to be able to play like him!

In the sense that he isn't included when people lionise Brown, Chambers and the like - and he should be - I'd like to mention Sam Jones. He was my early influence through his work with Cannonball Adderley. To quote John Goldsby, 'Sam Jones should always be remembered as one of the great bassists because he always made the band sound good. He wasn't a flashy soloist......'

If someone ever said that about me I'd be well pleased.

+1 Roger.. Sam Jones may not have been the flashiest of soloists but holy cow, did he play some very tasty stuff (walking and solos).

Rodney Whitaker is totally underrated. He hasn't been in the Downbeat polls in years.

The thing about the Downbeat polls is that the musicians in them are pretty much always great. But they're listed in order of popularity, not in order of talent, and a lot of great players get left out. For example, Christian McBride is a great electric bass player, but not a better electric bass player than Victor Wooten.

Larry Gales, definitely. Also Sam Jones - not a fancy player, but every note was exactly the right one.
