As a side note, he seems to have a penchant for weird stuff! I like it. YouTube - John Zorn - Masada Sextet live 2/6

I saw Singleton killing with Plunge at an LMF in-store (if you don't have any of their records I very highly recommend them), and Cammack was owning the jazz tent with Jamal, bad sound quality and all.
I came back really inspired to attempt to suck less.

| | | | Thomas Morgan.... He's a serious bass player. Knows the "role" of being a bass player, always covers his "responsibilities" and also transcends them. He plays with everyone from John Abercrombie to the incredibly wild free **** with Mary Halvorson. He also is big on the minimalism scene with tyshawn sorey and is a regular member in one of Paul motian's groups.

He was my early influence through his work with Cannonball Adderley. To quote John Goldsby, 'Sam Jones should always be remembered as one of the great bassists because he always made the band sound good. He wasn't a flashy soloist......'
If someone ever said that about me I'd be well pleased.

The thing about the Downbeat polls is that the musicians in them are pretty much always great. But they're listed in order of popularity, not in order of talent, and a lot of great players get left out. For example, Christian McBride is a great electric bass player, but not a better electric bass player than Victor Wooten. |
