Visit with Chuck Berghofer

The Univ. of N. Texas is running a series of events this spring ('09) featuring some great players that are brought in to teach for a few days. These artists then present a program in Fort Worth at the McDavid Studio, which is part of the Bass Hall complex.

Tonight, to a crowd of about 50, Chuck Berghofer played some of the most solid, tasteful, imaginative stuff with a quartet of UNT people. Because these guys had never met, they stayed with standards - no matter, they made it all sound fresh.

After the program, I waited behind four other people for a chance to speak with Chuck. He has a trio album out of the Film Music of Ralph Rainger which he mentioned at the close of the show and I was his only customer! He told me about the recording and carried on a pleasant conversation.

After we parted, I found the piano player who had been called to sub for his teacher - he did great work and I wanted to thank him for a great show. Then Chuck walked up and gave me his e-mail address so I could write and tell him what I thought of the recording. Man, did I feel special!

I know that bass players are not the biggest box office attractions in the industry, so I wasn't really surprised that the crowd was small. But I played for 50 people at the restaurant last Saturday, and nobody ever heard of me! (Not even the piano guy, but that's another story altogether...)

This guy is a treasure. Keep your eyes and ears open for a chance to hear him!

Finally!

After many years of being told it was either Carol Kaye, or Chuck Rainy etc., which I knew it was neither, it's great to finally know who to thank for the classic and inspirational "Barney Miller" theme. Thanks Chuck!
