Being Scandinavian - you should know the work of the late, great, Nils Henning Orsted Pederson - I also really like the Swedish bassist who played with Keith Jarrett : Palle Danielsson!

I don't know if any of the jazz bassists above have recorded strictly classical projects, but I have a feeling that they can/could hold their own!

What does that mean ... Stanley Clarke sometimes?!?! The man is a ABSOLUTE GENIUS ON THE INSTRUMENT!!! Sorry to get so carried away ... It was because of him that I dropped the sax and took up the bass in the first place! I think he's great ... DEFINITELY ONE OF THE GREATEST TO EVER TOUCH THE INSTRUMENT! Let me stop here before I get carried away ... But seriously, there are a ton of great bassist out there (including many of you in the talkbass forum) and you guys mentioned a good crew to top any list!

I think it's sad no one has mentioned Gary karr. That man is a pioneer if there ever was one.

LOL... I knew that would get a rise out of someone! What I was hinting at is that he is also an awesome slab bass player as well, and a lot of people are only aware of his BG work.
No disrespect intended there..

Jordi, you only asked who is great in the world of double bass, you did not specify in what genre. Now you have a new assignment.. Go research all the names mentioned here, find out what style of music they play, and try to find at least one recording of each one. That should keep you busy!( When you're not practicing, of course..)

Wow I skipped putting that one down, because I thought by my post it would have been a given. He really is a pioneer of Bass, especially of soloing with an Orchestra behind him.

There is truth to this comment though, I think stanley clarke is better on Bass Guitar than on double bass, dont get me wrong I love him on both, but sometimes on the DB he gets kind of repetitive, but he deserves his place for some of this innovations hes made to playing with unique techniques like using the modern slap technique on DB.

Using Google will give you a pretty good idea of who each is!
