adjustable bridges

So I'm thinking about getting an adjustable bridge for my bass just so I can try out and get to know different string heights to see which I like best without having to frequently deal with a luthier. I chatted to my old bass teacher about it and he reckoned I should just get my current bridge altered with adjuster screws.
How much money would you say this would cost and what are your opinions on adjustable bridges in general?
Does the gap in the bridge from the screw affect the sound quality in any noticeable way? I know quite a lot of people have them but are they in your opinion just a gimmick?

Cheers

Upton Bass lists $15 USD for the parts and $50 for labor.

When I cut a new bridge, I set up the bass for string height, spacing, etc with the solid bridge and then install the light weight aluminium adjusters. After installing the adjusters, the sound is always a little more open and full.

The heavy brass adjusters however, have a negative impact on the sound.
