another BROKEN NECK QUOTE

okay i just came home to my bass in pieces. Apparently my dog..apropriately named MINGUS...has knocked my bass over smashing it into a wall snapping the neck into two pieces. I know everyone will ask for pics, but forgive me for being a little out of it at the moment, but its a ugly break pretty much a "dovetail" break. I would like to know if its STUPID expensive for this to be fixed (replaced) or is it time to put that money into a carved bass. Despite me already knowing this is a cliche but im a ask anyways. What's the price of the neck being "dovetailed"?

your profile says 40s kay till you die, if your that connected to the bass then any amount of cash would be worth it. however, it might be prudent to see what you could get for it in its current shape and invest in a nice carved bass.

What do you consider stupid expensive? $500? $1000? More?

Arseniotall,

I see you are in D.C. Call John Lemoine, 202-528-2918. He's a great luthier and his prices are reasonable.

And if you need a double bass in the meantime, I've got three and would be willing to loan you one. I live in Gaithersburg MD but work in DC. PM me if you're interested.

Good luck.

Mighty generous of you considering the fate of the first bass!

I know a guy who fell down a flight of stairs with his bass. Not pretty...but while we were putting it back together the bass he was borrowing from a friend he left leaning against a chair near some cellists (you can figure out the rest, right???).

I don't think he found a 3rd bass to borrow!

So as long as Arsenio stays away from cellists, everything will be fine!

Seriously, I know how bummed I would be if this happened to me and I was without a bass for a while, and I'm in a position to help a local player, so why not?

(I do keep my dog out of the music room, but mostly because I worry about what might happen to those gut strings!)

Were the cellos OK?

WOW..thats really awesome of you. Thanks for the help. I actually have been driving hours to shanks in PA for all my needs, and he has the bass now. He says its nothing to worry about and will probably sound and feel better when i get it back because of the notorious neck problems kays already have. But you are the second time I have heard the name Lemoine brought up so hopefully i can save a little gas next time I need something done. I dropped it off on my way to europe for a tour so i hopefully dont need to borrow a bass, but your gesture is TRULY appreciated. Im not sure if I know you or have met you, but we should hook up, if you are out on the scene. Im always desperate for subs!!!

Guess i wont be getting that upton bass as a backup now. for sure.

Mine just licks them. It is the granulated hide glue they really go nuts for.

Still not clear about your problem.
When you refer to a broken neck...do you mean neck joint?
If so I would be interested in the cost estimate to have it fixed.
Thanks.

You remind me why I don't like pets ... they seem to always be destroying something ...

If it is a bolt on neck then replace the neck.

I heard the "thung" of something hitting my Engelhardt the other day, turned and saw my Saint Bernard walking by it with her tail wagging. Thankfully the stand holds the bass firmly when I'm not playing it. I have to consider moving it though. That tail could still do a lot of damage.
