Any estimate on repair costs?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWAX:IT
I know that it's near impossible to know what all will need to be fixed, but is there any way someone here who has a good bit of experience could tell me what I would expect to pay to fix this bass up? I'm just trying to get an idea of whether or not it would even be worth bidding on.

Wow.

I'd buy it if it was 2.99, and slowly restore it myself.

Not sure if it'd be a very good player after the restoration with all those cracks.

Looks like it needs a new fingerboard, nut, endpin, soundpost, etc,...

Lots of money to throw into it.

Many thousands, probably much more than the bass is worth, unless it's a pedigree instrument.

My guess is that $8k and that pile of lumber would yield a nice German flatback.
Unless you have deep pockets or the tools, shop and experience you should pass.
Sad to see them get to this state, but this one is pretty far gone.

Why is the top such a different color than the rest of the bass? And what is with the color of that fingerboard?(looks painted)

It would have to something VERY special. Looks like good kindling for a banjo fire to me.

The top is a different wood (most likely Spruce) and has had the varnish removed so...

The fingerboard appears to be Beech or maple, both pretty common on student basses back then.

What would be the purpose of removing the original varnish like that?

Also The tuners look like they have been painted gold instead of being actual brass like the seller claims. Was that a common practice on student basses as well?

hmm - $1025 plus parts and the next 6 months of my life? ... sounds great!

Wonder if the buyer noticed that the ff holes are asymmetrical?

It probably had a nice patina that some ignoramus wanted to spruce up with deck stain and polyurethane.

Unbelievable, I would have guessed it to go for three hundred or so. The only person I can see buying this is a new or student luthier looking to practice top table crack repairs.
