In the past two years, I have had two friends buy new Englehart basses. While I have never been a fan of Kays & Engleharts, the fit and finish of these new instruments was a pleasant surprise to me. They were much better quality than I remember the old ones being. Both of these instruments were bought from music stores (Guitar & amp shops). The shops ordered the basses from Englehart, had them delivered to the shop, and then proceeded to set them up for the customer. Both basses had the bridges installed backward. (flat side facing fingerboard) One of them had the soundpost set 4 - 5 inches south of the bridge. These shop luthiers may be able to set up a Fender Strat to perfection, but they don't know $hit about double basses. If you have to buy a bass from a music store (not recommended) DO NOT let them do the set up. Take it as delivered to a bass luthier, and if there are none in your area, at least go to a violin shop, where they are at least familiar with this family of instrument. Many of these "guitar luthiers" claim to be able to set up a bass, but there are damn few of them that even have a clue.
End of rant.
