That's a bridge "blank". When it is properly fitted to your bass by a lutiero, the top will be cut to suit the arch of your fingerboard and your strings, and the feet will be properly cut to match the top of your bass, and thinned out elegantly to a few mm. Its not a problem - unless you try to put in on your bass just like that!

Cool Bridge size..

The width of the bridge feet are revelant to the width of the top from the center to the center of Bass bar x2. If the Bridge feet are too narrow, you will loose sound. If too wide for your Bass, it can damage the top.

The width of a bridge is to be determined by a professional that has 'seen and examined' your Bass. I brought a Bass in for restoration (to Jeff Bollbach) and it will get a new Bassbar closer to the upper eye of the bass side f hole. This means that if the current bridge fits now, it will not fit latter as we need a wider one when the new bar is moved over.

Rarely can a do-it yourselfer pull off a professional level set-up unless he knows what to shoot for. Talent, time and materials are often wasted when one doesn't know all the inner workings of the bass he's trying to fix, maintain or improve.

But it would have to be massively over-sized to do that, no?

If the Bridge is just one size to big, overtime it will push down the treble side f hole and sink the top. This can also happen on the other side as well.

One size does NOT fit all.
