Exclamation Bass Repair Seminar at UNT Pictures Below

Dear Bassist,

This June I will be hosting an interactive, hands on repair seminar that deals with the maintenance, setup, and repair of the instruments we play. The topics discussed will be double bass specific. Each participant will get their hands dirty as they familiarize themselves with shop tools and materials. My objective is to provide an understanding and basic knowledge of proper set up and acceptable repair. Each participant will come away with a set of seam clamps they will make themselves, a small amount of hide glue, and the appreciation and knowledge of how to care for and repair their own instrument correctly.

Topics that will be covered:
Shop Safety
Sound post placement and installation
Bridge set up
Properties of glue and wood
How to make a bridge
How to install adjusters
How to care for and clean the bass.
How to fix cracks
Seam repair

Again, this will be a hands on class so you will be learning these concepts by trying them.
You do not need any thing except for clothes you don't mind getting dirty, some thing to write with and a healthy curiosity of this side of the double bass.

The dates for this class are June 16-17, from 10 am to around 5pm in room 105 of the Music Annex at the
University Of North Texas in Denton.

This seminar will be held in a highly air conditioned repair studio.

I will be around Monday, June 18th for more of an open forum day for those who are still in town.
The cost for this seminar is $150 per person.

These are pics of the workshop during the class.

Dear Participants,

I had a great experience teaching all of you last week. I think you all worked well as a team and also individually. You all expressed a healthy interest in bass repair and maintenance. I was impressed with how productive you all were. We cranked out 2 tail pieces, 26 seam clamps, some set up work on the school bass, and an appreciation for this kind of work. I am proud to say we made it through the seminar without losing any eyes or fingers. Great Job!
Someone left an Umbrella here.
All and all, great job guys, and have a good summer.

Thank you,

Michael J. Hartery

Well this year was successful enough that there is a strong possibility that it will happen next summer. This class is a part of the Jeff Bradetich Master class that is held at UNT every June.
