Just clip it on the bridge and put it in chromatic mode.

I got a Korg clip on mike for an additonal $7.50. It picks up the low B on my 5-string really well.. Almost every bass player I play with in the Northern Virginia/D.C. area uses this tuner. I know at least a couple of the National Symphony guys use it.

We noticed at rehearsal that we weren't in tune with each other.
We tested the clip on tuners with a pitch fork and there was a significant amount of variation in them. The strobe tuner was right on the mark.
The interesting thing is there were two "TuneTech" clip on tuners. They agreed with each other on the pitch (both being flat the same amount) but they did not agree with the pitch fork or the Intellitouch tuner. |

I always get bugged when someone insists on tuning their instrument by ear thinking they are right on. But then no one else is tuned exactly to them.
I have a Peterson strobe but really like my tiny clip on Meisel tuner. It seems to work well. I did not have as good of luck with the Intellitouch model. |

He told me the software was designed for a plucked string envelope, not a sustained bowed sound. He clips it to the pegbox cheek on his bass and tunes by plucking only.

Tonight I'm going to start a thread for folks to list iPhone/iPod apps that are useful to players.

so I just got an inexpensive meisel for $19, same concept, (clip on), and it works great even in noisy rooms.

I notice that with the bow, I might push the note a bit sharp when I apply bow weight or pressure to get more volume. It's hard to hear it, but the tuner does pick it up. (5cents or so sharper than the open string with pizz.)
Does this happen to you?
What do you do? |

For me I've found the most success by playing pizz and letting the note settle for a sec. It'll start sharp. I've also heard of guys plucking the string up near the nut when tuning. That way the string doesn't vibrate as wildly.
oh and I use a Korg CA-30 too. Cheap and effective. I end up tweaking my tuning over the night based on what I hear around me so I'm really just looking for a tuner (or tuning by ear for that matter) to get me close.

What do you do? | Where do you keep the tuner when you're using it? For a non-sympathetic vibrations tuner, I put my bass rag on the bridge and rest the tuner there.. and I only use up bows for this (same w/ harmonics). | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
