Bridge position?

I got an old junk (I think at least) Kay bass from the school I go to and I'm goofing around on it. It played bad so my bass teacher said carefully loosen the strings and sand down the bridge which I did, but even though I was careful I think I did a bit too much cause I was getting some more buzz then is nice.

So I moved the bridge up, but I'm not sure what I should do? Is it ok to move around the bridge?

I'm sure this is pretty basic stuff for you guys, but what things should I look out for and try when I'm experimenting tryign to get a good sound out of the thing.

Don't assume the Kay is junk bass. They're not everyone's favorite but they are very well regarded by many and can be quite nice when properly setup.

There may be some room for moving the bridge, but I doubt that is going to be very highly recommended as the bridge is meant to be in a particular spot for a reason. The best thing you could do for the bass is make an appointment with a good luthier and have it fixed up for you.

If you want to see what a well set up Kay plays like, you are welcome to try out mine. I'm located just east of Greenville (about an hour south of Celina). I'd also be happy to take a look at your bass if you would like. PM me if you're interested.

Excellent advice! It should be taken before more harm than good is done to that bass.

It sounds pretty good, but its been through a lot. Our orchestra program got cut six years ago sadly so its been sitting decomposing.

I'm not really worried about breaking it cause I'm mostly being careful, and its more of a learning experience I guess.

My car isnt in the condition of going any long distance (even one county over), but I'll be sure to remember you! Haha.

That's sort of how I got mine. My aunt rescued it from being dumpstered when the school her daughters went to consolidated with another district. It sat untouched in a corner in her house for over 10 years before I found out she had it and asked her for it.
