Bridge qualities? Wood vs. Plexiglass. vs others

A question about bridges, their construction quality, and what their effect on sound is.

I was inspired to ask this question after noticing some very nifty pictures of a Plexiglass bridge (on page 23 of the Palatino MegaThread in the EUB sub-forum in Double Bass - http://talkbass.com/forum/showpost.p...&postcount=452). I also had another woodworker mention to me that many of the instruments he made (many were double-basses in South America) had Ebony bridges, which made me think about even more tonal possibilities. I'm used to seeing Maple as the standard wood of bridges, but I wanted to find the differences between all of these bridges. Which ones have more sustain (less sustain)? Which ones emphasize warmth as opposed to the high end (and vice versa)? Which ones are suited to last longer than others? etc.
