Bridge/Strings height

I got my first double bass a few days ago and i'm at the stage of exploring my instrument. I have a Cremona 3/4 and i did all the string and bridge setup on my own, so i'm not sure if i've done it right. Strings seem to be very high and too strained. The height of the bridge is 9cm/3,5 inches. My question is: is there an optimum height of a bridge, or an optimum distance between strings and fingerboard (let's say at the end of the fingerboard)?

Congratulations! It is a wonderful instrument.

Here's a link to some previous discussions that may shed some light on your questions:

Newbie Links: SETUP

Here are some other links to Ken Smith's site, that has some discussion on basic setup:

http://www.smithbassforums.com/showthread.php?t=427

http://www.smithbassforums.com/showthread.php?t=150

Finally, if this isn't enough for you, there is Chuck Traeger's Book which also has some very specific setup recommendations:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw...eger&x=10&y=17

Finally, if you are learning double bass, a teacher can save you much time, money, and wasted opportunities to play well. They will also have experience with what is (and is not) a good setup for the type(s) of music you want to play.

Enjoy!

Thanks a lot for the links! There are all the answers i need. However, i realize that there is not a standard setup (that would make things much easier) and all depends on the instrument and personal style. So i'll keep on prectising and adjusting...
Thanks again.
