Building a DIY Hacklinger style gauge?

Has anyone had any experience using magnets to build a Hacklinger style thickness gauge? Bob Ross mentioned that someone he knew did it and that it could measure much thicker plates than the commercially available ones. I've got an idea of how to do it but would love to hear of anyone who has done it.

hacklinger

Don,
I think Haclinger is listed in the Strad and Strings source books, and you can call them?
I don't have a book handy to give you the number, but I called them before I bought mine.
There was a high energy nuclear physicist at Madison...Wisconsin U. who made and used one years before
I ever heard of Haclinger. Richard Davis knows him, if he's still around there. He also was the first I know of to invent a bass wheel. He studied bass from Richard years ago.

Thanks Martin. Somehow I didn't see that you had replied until now. Does it work by pulling up on the top magnet until the one inside the bass falls, or am I way off? -don
