Cold!

We're in a strange dry-cold spell and I noticed at my gig last night that the height of my G string has dropped by about 40% in the last few days. It played and sounded fine, but I was amazed at the movement. We're spoiled with fairly consistent humidity here and we don't see things like this very often.

From a purely academic standpoint, is the wood expanding or contracting?

Contracting, make sure your post isn't too tight if this keeps up. And check the humidity at home and use a humidifier to keep it around 38%.

Yup, this is cold front is no good. I have to tune my strings down at least a whole step before I venture out. They go pretty darned sharp. When the hell is this global warming thingy gonna kick in?

Home boys! I've never seen this many Seattle bassists on-line at the same time. Could it be that we're all indoors for a reason?

Yeah yeah, you're not going to tell me we're spoiled by all the good weather out here in Seattle, are you?

Nope.

The funny thing is that, in the Midwest, we are used to days or even weeks of the same weather be it hot and sticky or frigid and dry. In the Pacific NW it seems like the weather changes almost hourly. I was in Cannon Beach in Oregon a few years ago and you could just watch the waves of sun and rain and sun and rain and sun and rain just roll in across the ocean.

The Oregon coast is something else! Growing up in New England it's hard to imagine the beach being such a fierce place. It get's drilled with hurricane force winds during winter storms and in the summer when every place inland is 90 degrees for months the beaches are a consistent 60 degrees with a 30 mph wind blowing from the north.

Yea, living in Oregon I really strive to keep my DB in a pretty controlled environment. If I left it in my car this time of year, I can imagine all sorts of ugly expansion\contraction issues.

Did I mention its cold and dry here?

Hey Seattle TBDBers,

Cold, dry. Old carved basses not happy. Wrapped gut strings not happy.

Don't worry; it should snow/rain for the next few days. Then, we can complain that its too wet.

Dudes, I think it's time for another TBDB-Seattle hang. We seem to have added some membership since last time.

My bass seems to fairing okay, but my hands are thrashed... dry and cracked!
I'm always down for another hang... let's plan something in the new year.
Cheers,
John

Amazing how cold weather brings people together. After New Years sounds good to me.

Moisture is back!!! Yippeee!

NW, of course, anyone within driving distance who is up for the drive is welcome. We just need to find a place to do it. I wonder if there is a community center or something that would welcome us?
