We're in a strange dry-cold spell and I noticed at my gig last night that the height of my G string has dropped by about 40% in the last few days. It played and sounded fine, but I was amazed at the movement. We're spoiled with fairly consistent humidity here and we don't see things like this very often.
From a purely academic standpoint, is the wood expanding or contracting?

The funny thing is that, in the Midwest, we are used to days or even weeks of the same weather be it hot and sticky or frigid and dry. In the Pacific NW it seems like the weather changes almost hourly. I was in Cannon Beach in Oregon a few years ago and you could just watch the waves of sun and rain and sun and rain and sun and rain just roll in across the ocean. |

Growing up in New England it's hard to imagine the beach being such a fierce place. It get's drilled with hurricane force winds during winter storms and in the summer when every place inland is 90 degrees for months the beaches are a consistent 60 degrees with a 30 mph wind blowing from the north. |

Cold, dry. Old carved basses not happy. Wrapped gut strings not happy.
Don't worry; it should snow/rain for the next few days. Then, we can complain that its too wet. |

I'm always down for another hang... let's plan something in the new year.

NW, of course, anyone within driving distance who is up for the drive is welcome. We just need to find a place to do it. I wonder if there is a community center or something that would welcome us?
