crack repair

I found a string bass with a long crack running on face parallel to strings and between the f holes. Generally is it possible to repair this or does it require a whole new front/face piece.

Yes it is possible to fix it. It is a fair amount of work, and it helps if you know what you are doing.

You might be better served to take it to a competent bass-repair luthier, who can tell you exactly what to expect.

I second that. Fixing cracks in basses requires more than just a bit of glue. A good luthier would have done several repairs like this one before. I have seen several home repair jobs that have devalued the instrument considerably because they have actually done more damage than good. A repair like this could be pricey. I would get an estimate first.
