Dealing with intentional scratching ( ID for example)

I recently bought an instrument from a public school. On the back the schools initials are scratched in near the neck. It is a fine carved instrument and I am trying to restore it. The original varnish has a nice patina and is coming back to life with some work. Right now it looks like it was just the varnish and not any of the wood that was scratched.

If you have dealt with this part of restoration before what has worked for you?

I could try to fill the scratches level with spirit varnish and rub it out with some extremely fine sandpaper.

I could sand the entire area of the scratches and carefully feather it back with sandpaper and a matching varnish.
