Different Woods

I'm wanting to know a few things, first woods.
I've built sound boards for guitars and Mandolins.
They having a Bass and a Treble side, so I'm going out on a limb here and saying this is also true for the Bass. So one is removing wood from the underside of the sound board and checking it for tonal production like an Archtop Guitar or a mandolin... Correct?.
the next Question being can one find wood in a big enough piece to book end the front and back, or does this need to be pieced together? and what is the usual support other than joining?
Thanks in Advance.

start working your finger towards the search function.
your on the right trail...same principles, different mechanics.
top and back is commonly two pieces, the back getting some inside bracing, the top.. stand alone, with an assist from the bass bar and sound post.
