Unhappy Double Bass Stand

I am about to buy a DB stand. What are your recomendations, make, for a quality, sturdy stand?
Years ago I bought a fairly flimsy stand (thin hollow tube construction, partof which snaped) and which had a cup to put in the endpin---which was pretty useless to locate the endpin.

+1, stands can get knocked over. Corner or on it's side on the floor.

+2 Corner or floor. Stand isn't worth the risk.

Thumbs up

+3.
In fact, to be truthful, most really caring bassists who own an expensive bass consider a stand a really dangerous proposition, IME.

-1. I'm an extremely caring bassist with a medium-priced bass and it's a stand all the way for me. I have a sturdy Meisel stand that sits in a corner. If I were to prop my bass in a corner, I'd need some type of padding to protect against scratching. Granted, no dogs or kids in the house. It's not gonna get knocked over. Now, I wouldn't have it in a stand on a gig. On it's side on the floor is preferred then.

Check this thread.

It looks similar to my Ingles stand. The only thing I don't like about it is the fact that on the top it's supported by the neck and not the upper bout. I usually stuff some padding there. I realize this is a really minor complaint.

Corner of a room is great, if you have a free one.

Hey Doc, betcha' I'm a more extremely caring bassist than you!
I sure didn't mean to take shots at basses of any lesser value and now days I'd consider any good bass expensive.
Can you ever forgive me?

corner always for me. i drape a towel over the bass to protect the edges from friction with the wall. i've definitely seen stands damage instruments. so long as you get a good stand and are careful you can go either way i guess.

You have good point about the neck. Given that it hits the neck near the heel and that the lower ribs are supported, it seems to me that the moment arm wouldn't really end up with strain on the neck. I'm very "caring" about this too. When I transport my bass in the car, it's on its back with a pillow support under the neck heel.

No offense taken-- not even close. The truth is I'm a fanatic about bass care (just ask my family and/or my luthier). As for cost, to me, my bass is expensive at $10-15k. That, of course, is medium-low in the DB world. It's still my baby and I pamper it as much as I can.

My thinking exactly - I set the upper support to be right near the heel, so no big deal at all.

I do the same thing when transporting the bass - a rolled up foam pad, duct taped together, under the upper bout.

I thought about doing it, but with a day job, playing in 3 orchestras, and trying to practice every day, it just isn't in the cards.

I might make some drawings for those who want to make their own. If you have access to a table saw and a router, its a piece of cake.

Thanks, but I would need access to the necessary skills as well.
