double bass volume

I have an question about the doublebass.

What is important for the volume of the bass. I don't mean pulling harder on the strings or something. Kind of wood the bass is made, way of setting of the "stapel"

Thanx

Thanks for your reaction. It isn't what I mean.

I wanna be some more specified. I got an old one. The bridge doesn't make a 100% full contact to the top. I have the soundpost just placed a few cm behind the bridge. I don't know if thats important for volume. It's an very old bass. It's not an good one. It isn't a bass for an luther or something.

I wanne make it by myself, learn to play the bass and when i got more expierience, buy an new one

Thanx

If the bass is otherwise healthy, it could really benefit from a trip to a good luthier. A lot more can be brought out of an instrument than you might think at first glance. A good going over, and you may decide you don't need or want a new bass.

Not good. Even though not uncommon.

I think there is no bass that is not for a luthier. If it's old, chances are it benefits greatly from a luthier's hands and expertise.

There are MANY variables that contribute to the volume of the bass. That's why Chuck Traeger's books were recommended.

Bridge fit is important
Bridge material is important,
Soundpost fit is important,
and so is:
Soundpost postition
Tailpiece length
Tailpiece weight
Tailpiece cable and position
String height
String type
Back graduations (if carved)
Back bracing (if flatback)
Top plate graduations (if carved)
Top plate arching
Bass bar
etc etc

The bridge is only one of MANY factors. The books mentioned go into a good amount of detail on these things.
