Drumstick endpin

I just picked up a drumstick to try out as an endpin today. I like it, but there's one problem: It won't go all the way into the bass when I'm done. I have a rubber cane tip on the end of it, and I would have liked to push the endpin all the way in to the rubber tip when finished playing for transport. I tried carving it down a little, but I don't want to do it too much. So, I was wondering, when I transport the bass, it would not be a good idea to not have anything there in case I have to set the bass down on the ground, right? Should I get something to slip in there when the endpin isn't?

I hope that made sense, because reading it back to myself looks all confusing.

The bass will be fine if you stand it on the endpin boss without the stick. Just don't wham it down.

Yes, I believe that would be fine, but I would get some kind of cover for it, like a small sock. That way, it won't get scratched up and there will be less potential for serious damage.
