E string lost its mojo - what to try first?

Like the title says. It's the LaScala hybrid, Dominants on the G, D, A, and a spiro stark on the E. They've all been on there for a couple of years. Recently, I played a couple of gigs where I had to detune the E to D and then bring it back up. When I brought it back up the last time, the growl and power on the low F, F# and G seemed to be lacking. Last night I played a concert at the U., and the E seemed to be lagging behind the others in terms of power and growl.

What should I try first?

1) New string
2) Figure out if the string got turned funny in retuning
3) The bridge seems a little skewed toward the treble end of the board. Maybe the bass bar is choking the string?

Any ideas? I've not yet seen a stark go dead, at least not with me and my alligator skin playing it. And the bass itself has always been killer. The ply LaScala still growls and punches me in the gut for days with the same string setup. It's never sounded better on the E than the hybrid before. Hmm....

Dude.

Buy a new ****ing string.

Nothing will match the Stark E. A new one will kill you.

I second the motion. Two years!?
Whatya want? Even everlasting Spiros have limits.

You prolly are playing the Hybrid more than the Ply.

FWIW- Outside of this year's foray into SF's and EP's, I've been playing on Spiros for something like 28 years. I like them on the fresh sside. I think they start losing their good juice after 9-10 months or so if you're playing alot. For me they're peaking 4-6 weeks or so after they are new. The detuning/tuning thing just hastened the demise of an already old string.

Treat yourself and keep the wheels of commerce flowing.

Just for my own personal edification, what are you using for a tailpiece and tailpiece cord?

Whatever came standard on the LaScala, I guess. Aircraft cable for the wire, and ________? for the tailpice. It's black wood and not one of the lighter synthetic ones like they use now, if that helps.

I'd be shamed to tell you how old my Spiro Orchestras are, including the low B.

Every bass is different. Dead spiros sound like crap on my Cleveland, the same exact dead strings on my ancient carved bass sound great.

Well, it turned out to be...

(drum roll by JUNIORTOAD)

None of the above. The bass felt funny, so I measured the string height. It was a little low, probably due to changes in the weather/season. I cranked it back up to the normal height (7-10mm), and now the string is back to growling like a protective Rottweiler. So, the whole thread is much ado about nothing. Good times!

Not for me. I raise the heights, it's live for about 2 days, then goes dead. Maybe I'll have to try it again.
