End pin ID

What's this end pin called? Its on a german bass. Feels very solid. I've never seen one before.

Thanks Eric. Does it use a tapered hole in the block? From the exterior it looks like it uses a straight hole with a knurled knob tightened from the inside.

It comes with two different tapered aluminium inserts. The endpin itself is straight, and fits into one of the inserts.

To me, these are best used if you play arco, sit on a stool, and like a very upright playing position. There was a cellist who popularized these...not sure of the name though. Perhaps a bassist has done the same?

I know a couple cellists who went through a tilted endpin "phase." All of them got it, loved it for a while because of the way it angled the instrument more upward, and then for one reason or another they all switched back to regular pins.

I guess that's a good thing about this pin. You just put it back straight when you want it straight. That's the way I'm using it anyway. It's angled in the photo to show what it does. The white rubber tip is a doorstop from Mr Bricolage ...
