Extension on a carved Eberle?

Hey guys, first post in the Setup/Repair forum.

I own an older Eberle (fully carved). It seems to be a very well built instrument, outside of its crazy shiny finish (which I'll be getting rid of when I come back from school.

The question is for you luthier types: Is the fully carved Eberle solid enough to put an extension on it? I'd get another instrument, but this one has too much sentimental value to sell/give away.

Give me your $.02!

Thanks!

Well I personally have no experience with either your bass AND I'm not a luthier but I find that when considering the price of a fingered extension (which is what I was assuming you want) it may not be "worth" it because it is almost more expensive (or more expensive in certain situations) than the bass itself. It may be a better idea to keep it as a beater and try saving up for an already-extended bass or try a bunch of basses with extensions, and if you feel that your bass is better than those other basses then maybe you should consider getting an extension.

IMO, there is no reason why you can't install a C-extension on your Eberle- what are your concerns about doing it? All the Eberles that I have seen are made pretty strong including the neck and scroll. Have you or someone else given you a reason why you can't?
