Fingerboard color

Hi

I am wondering if it is possible to dye a fingerboard black without using anything that would wear off or affect playability.

I have a bass that has an Indian Ebony fingerboard. Some parts are lighter than others and there are some black spots in there too. It plays well and the dye would only be for cosmetic reasons. I would rather leave well alone rather than risk ruining a perfectly good board.

many thanks

H

Of course, I preface this comment by stating I actually prefer Macassar ebony and its stripes. You won't ruin the board, but one slip and getting the dye on something else could ruin that. I'd leave it be. Especially if one of the greyer spots is under a well-played part of the board, it will darken up a little on its own over time.

I've had good success with Fiebing's Professional Oil Dye, in black. It's actually intended to be used as a leather dye, but several places that sell guitar-making supplies, such as Stewart-MacDonald, carry it as a fingerboard dye.

It takes a while to dry, so be prepared to be wiping black smudges off your fingers for a few days. Don't know about availability in England.
