Jimmy - you really picked a good time to come into this site. Matthew Tucker has completed his first bass and documented it with photos nearly as good as a printed book. Don Harris and another member are in the process of building their first basses and are also documenting their work here. However, it is always good to have some books for reference. There is no single book has all of the answers, but the ones listed below are the only ones in print that I know of that are specifically about making doublebasses. When you can't find the answers in the books, this forum is a good place to ask for help. There are several professional makers who post here who do this kind of work every day.
Here are links for some places where you can buy the
Peter Chandler book , the
Harry Wake book, and another good bass making book (with lots of photos) by
Bob Hitchings from the UK. You don't need to have them all, but each one offers some different ways to do the many tasks in bass making. They are all relatively inexpensive for books of this type. There is also a book on
bass repairing and setup (about $85.00) by Chuck Traeger which many people here have found to be useful.
