G string too bright

I am having trouble finding a G that is dark enough on my 7/8 Gagnon. The lower 3 strings have plenty of bass, but every G I try seems too bright, open or stopped. Is there an adjustment somewhere that might address this issue? I am thinking soundpost tweak, switching tuning peg assignment, removing the Realist, trying an E with more tension. Any suggestions appreciated.

Sorry, I need to bow on it, too!

A TI Belcanto might be a good fit for you.

What other strings are you using and what G strings have you tried?

Well, I've been swapping and mixing strings for seems like 3 years now, so I was kinda looking for a setup tweak that might accomplish this. I had tried a Belcanto G a while back, and it didn't thrill me. But just for yuks I put one on and so far it seems more promising than it did the first time, so thanks Jake for the idea.

I was hoping not to turn this into another string mix-and-match thread, but I guess it goes where it goes. At the moment I have the BC G, Permanent D, FCS A, and Jazzer E. It works pretty well as a gradual progression from dark to bright going from high to low strings. The Perm is a tad beefy, so I might try the BC D next.

Other G's I have tried: Spirocore, Superflexible, Dominant, Eurosonic, Oliv, Flexocore, Original Flexocore, Flatchromesteel, EP, EP weich, Obligato, Jargar.

I am going for a true hybrid thing - 50/50 pizz/arco.

Any luthiers wanna chime in?

I'd put on the darkest string you've got, maybe the EP? Then knock the soundpost around to see if that helps. Moving the soundpost further south of the bridge feet might be a good start..

In theory, would moving the soundpost as you suggest darken the whole instrument, or might it affect only the G string?

You could also try one of those rubber washers that pirastro gives out sometimes with strings to dampen the g-string a little bit.

Tried that with the flexocore. Didn't help much. That's a great string, but I'm liking the BC at the moment - it's a little looser feeling and not harsh.

With all the respect that you are due -- which is ALL respect -- is it possible that this is a "seems" rather than an "is?" Has someone else played the instrument for you?

Not for any great length. I'll keep that in mind as I work through this. All I know is what I feel and hear from the bass (and amp). I guess I used the word "seems" because I view it as a matter of taste rather than fact. Thanks for the suggestion!

Not necessarily. I often find that, when setting up a bass, that if the soundpost is not in the best spot, some of the strings are overpowering while others are very mute. This could be where you're at right now. I'd suggest taking it to a luthier and make sure the soundpost is cut right and it's in the sweet spot..
