glue %

Hi everybody,

This is my first post on DB side. So let’s see how it goes.

I am about to repair open seem on my DB and am not sure about % of the either fish or hide glue (I have both) that I should use. So if anybody can provide a recipe for it.

I am art restorer and am very familiar with this kind of glue, but probably in way smaller percentage.

ok well for hide glue its up to feel, your going to need to do a ratio that you think will have enough strength, although im sure most guys will say a 50 to 50 ratio or something like that, in my personal experience you have to do it just a little bit over what you think it will need to hold, hide glue is great because when something breaks the hide glue bond its because it was meant to break to relieve the posibility of cracking, you could also just add water to your seem to re activate the hide glue, then clamp

I normally use 2 parts water to 1 part dry glue. I don't begin heating the glue until after it has absorbed all of the water. However, I usually water it down some for gluing seams on the top. You don't want it too strong. The glue is your safety valve. You want the seam to pop before the table wood has a chance to crack.
