Have you seen any interesting hatpegs?

I'm thinking about replacing the hatpegs on my basses. One of them just has a piece of dowel for the A peg after it apparently broke. The others are mismatched and clunky looking. I have a lathe so I'll be able to turn my own. Anyone seen anything that looks particularly elegant or interesting? I'm also wondering about having an interesting carving done on the ends. In other words not turned on the lathe but hand carved.

For hand carved or turned pegs, I would look at regional period furniture pieces that correspond to the particular bass. Maybe ?

Mario Lamarre's basses have consistently fancy carved hatpegs that may give you some ideas. Not my cup of tea though, and I don't think the shiny metal parts of the tuners he uses look "right" with the intense carving he's into.

There could be more creativity w/ choice of materials than the actual design.

Try using exotic woods with bright colors; that would certainly be different from the the typical black ebony pegs.

Wood inlays or precious stones, might be nice too.

I've always dug the older, bulkier hat pegs that pop out a little further.. kinda like this one:

How about stealing some ideas from the lathers.... mini cups instead of bulbs? Simple cylinders with a groove for design style? I suppose your imagination is the limit. You could have gargoyles if you wanted but it might get over-the-top.

Maybe the pegs could be the bust of different famous composers?

I thought about that. On my jazz bass have Mingus, Miles, Charlie Parker and Coltrane. I don't know that I would want them looking over my shoulder all night though. I would be afraid that Mingus would deck me for not playing something inspired.
