How can I fix my E string?

While playing jazz or just fooling around, if I pluck too hard on the E string it falls off.
I think my nut might not be deep enough because it falls off at the head.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Can you post a picture of the nut? I've never heard of this happening, but it does indeed sound like the knotch in the nut for the E string is too shallow and/or skinny if it falls out of the nut like you said.

I cannot post a picture of it right now, but I can give you statistics:
About 3/4's or more is raised above the groove of the nut
