I can't imagine it would differ from making a flight case for anything else. Of course, so many companies offer cases out of superior composite materials, why would you want to make your own?

Are you look for plans or you just want to hear, you measure the bass, cut the wood, put the edges on, etc., etc., etc.

With the way things are going with airlines, building the flight case might be the easiest part.

The other thing, most cases are constructed from resin, Kevlar etc. How much experience do you have working with those materials?

Building an "Anvil" type case (which sounds like what you're describing Jazzman) would be a solution for transportation by truck or bus, but for flying it's going to end up being WAY too heavy for anything other than air freight. That's fine if all you need to do is get from point A to point B. But if you're touring, it's gonna break the bank.

I dunno, if you have a source/relative that build fiberglass boat hulls or something, you may be able to cook something up. But unless you have access to that type of stuff, it's got to be cheaper getting a finished product from somebody who is taking advantage of cost-of-scale (ie each one is gonna be cheaper if you're making 3000 instead of just one).

what Ed said seems right, but f I were going to try to make a case, I'd make it out of corrugated plastic board, like this stuff:

I wrote to the owner of this company back in march and asked about a double bass case--he said they have one in the works

But if i was going to try to make one, this stuff seems easier to work with than fiberglass and lighter than plywood

I've been thinking of attempting one in a simmilar manner to the way I make custom kickpanel speaker pods for cars, only in sort of a reverse way. Basically, wrap a bass in plastic and foil, then start layering fiberglass or carbon around it, basically cocooning it. For my pods I use a fleece type material soaked in resin, but I think there are probably lighter and stronger options out there. Or, you could possibly shoot it with chopped mat out of a gun. After the bass is completely enclosed, cut a seam around the middle, and split the shell into two pieces. I'm thinking somehow padding the bass before wrapping it in the plastic or foil would be a good idea, so as to allow for padding and bracing to be installed inside later. After the shell is taken off, it could be built up in crucial areas, smoothed out, and finished and hardware applied. Seems to me like this *could* produce a functional hard case with minimal size and weight, although at this point it's pure speculation. Anybody want to add on to the idea?

How much are you asking for it?
