How to Measure and Cut a Nut (or) Zero Fret on an EUB?

I just bought a cheap(stagg) EUB for $200. It is currently without a nut (otherwise perfect). I wondering how you go about measuring the distance between the strings to properly cut the nut. Someone I know through work said they have some tools in autocad that will do this for me. But if I was to figure this out on my own how would I? I do not have the original nut to compare this to.

or

I have been looking and haven't found anything about using a zero fret on an EUB. Is this possible? If you were going to bow the bass would there be issues?

I was thinking about a zero fret because as a beginner it would give me more chances to mess up.

What do you think.

Thanks again talkbass

This zero fret doesint seems a good solution for me. I think better to deal with nut.
