How much visible plate movement?

I was wondering what kind of top plate movement you typically see on good basses. The area to watch is the bass bar side f-hole. I look down at it from the fingerboard when I pull the A string maybe an inch or 2 or so (gut string in my case), just short of letting it go as if you were plucking it normally. I see the plate move quite a bit when I do this (it's visible along the edges of the f-hole). It's supposed to be one of many indicators that give an idea about plate flexibility, but then I've seen a few bases that were total canons and the plate didn't seem to move that much.

Can you give it a shot if you have a minute?

George
