I recently changed from gut to steel strings and my bridge (no adjusters) needed to be lowered about 2mm. So I took my baby in for some work. Man, it was a great experience! He let me stay and watch as he worked on my bass. He looked inside my bass (profesional curiosity, I guess), took a mirror and showed me my soundpost wasn't fitting correctly, there was a considerable gap both on the top and bottom, causing my tone and bass to suffer. Since the old one was too short, a new soundpost was in order. I was able to wittnes how he fitted the soundpost, trying once, taking a bot of wood out and then trying again until he achieved an almost perfect fit. It was very very interesting, he explained me in detail the correct ideal "theorical" place of the soundpost in relation to the bass bar and the bridge He then took care of the bridge. It amazed me that he did everything by knife and only sanded my bridge to give it a soft finish.
I'm one happy man and my bass is sounding better, it's easier to play and no longer in pain
