I like to use lightly tinted satin lacquer - build to the desired colour and then top with clear satin. The reflectance of a 30% satin is just like my '38 with original finish. |
Thanks Jake. It looks like it has had something spilled on it at the south edge of the lower bout. Completely dissolved the lacquer and bleached the wood a bit. The existing finish has a sexy beat-up look to it that I need to preserve.
Just for the sake of sharing - the top is sinking, and bulging a bit over the soundpost :/ and it's had a half-assed neck repair - button completely trashed. Some edge repairs done using bondo.

Back and ribs are solid, though - and most importantly it sounds great.
Trusting your advice - I'll let you know how it goes.
