Key Bass Neck Problem ?

My friend had a 1940 Kay S-51 Five String 3/4 Bass. The neck has pulled way from the body and left a gap. It is still intack but the Bass is not playable. He is going to get it fixed in the near future.

Question: What caused something like this to happen? It was not dropped. The Bass sat in a corner for years, and Eventually the neck pulled way from the body. Is it common for this to happen? What does a repair of this nature ususally cost?

Please respond.

Kay neck joints work perfectly for factory assembly by semi-skilled workers. As a time and labor saver, they are great. As a long-term stable neck joint, they are usually a failure. You will rarely encounter a Kay bass that has not had (or currently needs) work on the neck joint. One of the worst problems is the simplest: there is often a space left underneath the bottom of the neck. The pressure of the strings will often close the gap, causing the back of the neck to dislocate from the back button. Also, the wedge shape of the hard maple neck dovetail wreaks havoc on the softer wood of the body's neck block.
