more low end

is there a way to get more low end out of the cheap factory model i am renting? my e string sounds really thin, not near as bassy as my a.

Many people struggled with the same issue. One thing that seems to help is to use a stronger E. Use a heavy E for a medium A-G for instance. A soundpost adjustment may also help, but I think the overall results will vary. Have you discussed this with the place you are renting from?

Have you listened to the bass while someone else is plying it? Sometimes you can't hear the full tone of a bass from a playing position.

very good point, the bass is made to project its tone and its usually hard to hear pizz. tone while playing yourself, the stronger e is a good suggestion and so is the soundpost, a change of strings could also change the tone of your bass, ive had alot of success with labella strings(i belive mine are nickel wound around a rope core)
