Is my bass ok ?

Hi Guys !

I’ve been reading a lot about bass setup lately and frankly it god me worried. I’ve read a lot about wrong bridges, sinked in necks etc.. and a lot of the times I had no idea what you were talking about. When I looked at some of the pictures I saw nothing wrong.

So My hopes where that by posting some pics you smart guys could give me some comment and/or advice about my base . Maybe even give me some setup advice since I’m changing my focus from mostly Jazz to Mostly classical.

Thanks for the thumbs up !

Well I bought the bass November 2003, so 2 years ago this month. The exact age of the bass I don’t know but I was told somewhere in the 90`ths. It’s Romanian . Don`t know who build it, though I think My Luthier (Jan Knooren, Schimmert, The Netherlands) knows, must ask him when I see him again.
And as far as how much.. What do you give.. ? (It’s not for sale though)

Beautiful bass indeed. I'm no expert but I can't see anything wrong with that baby. Is that top carved?

Let's see, you've got a luthier but would rather have advice about your bass given to you by people you don't know who have only seen pictures of it on the web.

Well, OK......

Wow.. Sorry I asked.

Don’t get me wrong.. I have a Luthier and I do value his opinion.. Greatly. That doesn’t need to say that I don’t value other peoples opinions. It wouldn’t be the first time that I hear someone disagree with a Luthier on this Forum. And secondly yes I have one Luthier.. that’s 1 and each Luthier has it’s own idea’s and opinions, what’s wrong with asking other peoples opinion’s ?

It’s not that I would "rather" here your opinion, I would like to "also" here your opinion. And isn’t the internet a great medium where that is possible.

As for the pictures part... you are right, They are only pictures and they don’t say everything. But that is why I have a Luthier... right.
And for the people I don’t know part, That’s really an advantage, You guys have no reason to not tell me something and as such can be completely honest and objective.

You see I have thought about this before I posted the pics, and all I did was ask advice.

Lightbulb Similar or same Maker?

Here is a Bass similar to yours. Look at the Back design; http://www.contrabass.co.uk/2696.htm

Thanks for the tip ! I will certainly look into this and contact my luthier about this. If I know more I will post it, but I could take a week or 2 since my Luthier is out of the country at the moment.

Opinion

Could be my eye or the pics... but that G string looks like it could be cut too deep in to the bridge.

String cut too deep - any reason?

Sorry, to cut in. I was just browsing the pics and the G string seems to me cut a bit deeper than others, but .... what is the reason NOT to cut too deep? Does this make the sound a bit dull, muted or how to describe that best?

I think my Cremona has this and that's why I am asking, still I like the sound a bit muted and not too clear and brite.

Thanks,

- Jerry -

Having the notches a bit deep on the bridge isn't something to worry about too much in my opinion. If it isn't causing some noticeable problem with the sound, no reason to mess with it.

But I do feel strongly that if you ever get a new bridge for your instrument, have it done by someone who will really put a lot of care into fitting everything perfectly. Arnold Schnitzer's bridges, for example, are without flaw.

Are those Animas Ed? Maybe I'll try those next. How is the bow response?

Sorry to partially sort of hijack.

Anima's indeed. As far as bow response, my joke has always been that arco is an Italian word that means the end of a ballad. I don't play enough bow to make a meaningful statement.

My teacher does though, and he says that they take a little work but he loves the sound.
