New C-Extension in Germany

I met a luthier in Cologne, Germany this autumn who had an interest in C-Extensions. I showed him my Merchant extension with my Capos and E-Stop. He made his first one last weekend and is already working on a second.

Note, He didn't want to drill through the scroll, so he ran the string over the scroll through a metal tube. He says it works very well.

That's pretty nice Mr Roboto.
The tubing is a clever idea.
Could you post a close-up of the extension/fingerboard join?

Thanks, Jake

I plan to visit him next week. I'll hopefully see his second job. What about that joint interests you? I'm more curious about how the thing is secured to the scroll/pegbox. The way the string is routed, I want to see how the extension is anchored to the scroll, and how easily the string tunes.

Pretty nice work for a first try. Especially considering how rare extensions are here. I hope he makes a lot more of them.

That's my bass.
The extension is anchores by two screws. On at the scroll and one at the lower side of the pegbox. Tuning is as smooth as before. The string I use is a Pirastro Permanent, so tuning is no problem at all.
The luthier's name is Daniel J. Kress, who did a wonderful job with my instrument.

2nd extension by Daniel Kress

Daniel has finished his second extension.
I'm sorry that the photos are not great, but the varnish matching job is amazing. He chose the more traditional path of drilling through the scroll this time. He said he didn't do it before because the scroll was narrow, and the hole would have broken through the side. I say with no irony that I'm proud to have my Capo and E-Stop installed on an extension of this quality.
