oh..My Neck

Well...

After 30 years I finally did it...I snapped off the top of the neck of my upright bass (at the "g" spot on the E string).

For 30 years I've been driving around Manhattan in cabs with my bass, out the cab window....but that is NOT how it happened.

I was going up the escalator on Delancy street, with my bass behind me...and I didn't even realize the low ceiling.

All I heard behind me was "CruNcH"...as the bass got wedged between the escaltor stairs and the ceiling. I pushed the bass back..and prayed for the best....I did the quick feel through the case...and then opened it up..

UG...The Neck was broken clean through..sparing the ebony board.

I was on the way to a gig...which I have 5 more dates for and just got my baby back from David Gage..he reglued and put on a new bridge for me exactly a month ago.

I'm just sharing my despair...what a stupid mistake. I will be taking her back in to David tomorrow, but I have a feeling that the neck will need to be replaced...about a $2k job.

Watch those low ceilings my friends.

Cheer me up will ya?

I was at Jazz Summerschool last week and it was on a very hilly campus with lots of steps. So I was coming down the hill, when a flute player I had been doing some playing with, shouted hello at me, along with the suggestion that I might at this point be wishing I played flute....

As I tried to shout back a witty rejoinder, I tripped over a step and went flat on my face - the only consolation, I thought was that my bass was on my back and should be cushioned by my body - but no, the scroll hit the concrete with a thump !!

My knees were completely skinned with blood pouring out, but all I could think about was my bass - eventually when I got the chance to check, it looked OK , but then I realised the fingerboard had been knocked loose!!

I can talk about it now as I have got it fixed, but it was really annoying at the time, as it meant I had to use my EUB for a week, when I had been looking forward to playing my DB all day and building up stamina, etc. !
