Oh My Nut!

I just finished setting up a nice Wilfer bass . It was very tight and wolfy and the response was fighting all the way. Not a pleasure to play. I noticed the strings at the nut were set in way too deep. I removed enough material at the nut so the strings laid half in the grove and half above the groove. This made the strings more free to vibrate under the bow. The bass Played just fine after that and was very easy to manage. I was surprised to see such a huge difference in the sound and playability by removing just a little bit of material in the right place.

It seems that all the small tweaks are what make a bass come together sound-wise. My new bass was opening up nicely, but had the shop set-up and undressed FB for a couple of months while I decided just what changes to make. I did the nut almost immediately when I got the bass, so I didn't notice much then. I did the FB about a month ago and that made a huge difference in sound that I didn't expect.
